Women's Conference in the Dominican Republic
Summer of 2019, 14 teenage girls stepped up to be leaders in the beautiful Dominican Republic. We were given the opportunity to explore another country while exploring ourselves as young women.
The call for service is strong on the island and we had the honor of meeting and assisting with several nonprofits that operate to assist with education, environmental awareness, poverty, insufficient access to health care and female empowerment. By digging into the history of the Dominican Republic, we could better understand the issues the island faces today.
We brushed up on our Spanish while chatting with the lively and inviting locals over the D.R.’s traditional dish of fried chicken, beans and rice which we ate everyday. From touring some of the oldest streets in the Americas to walking the dirt roads of the “bateys” to projects where the Haitian immigrants live in true poverty, we travelled across the island of Hispaniola in only a week. It was an eye opening and empowering trip for all of us. To read more about our daily adventure in the D.R. click the button.
