What is Sister Cities International?
Founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, Sister Cities International is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit which serves as the national membership organization for individual sister cities, counties, and states across the U.S. This network unites tens of thousands of citizen diplomats and volunteers in 570 member communities with over 2,300 partnerships in 150 countries on six continents. Summer of Service (SOS)
Summer of Service (SOS) is a San Antonio-based, 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to education through service and travel by providing students with the opportunity to learn abroad in order to better their own communities and serve back home. We are made up of teachers, students, and parents who, with the help of the greater community, engage in service on a monthly basis and provide students with the opportunity to travel abroad at least one summer per year. As the premiere youth service-learning and travel abroad organization in San Antonio, SOS is leading a delegation of student ambassadors to the Sister Cities Youth Leadership Conference in Washington, DC from July 13th - 17th, 2016. Conference Overview
The 2016 Youth Leadership Summit will help mark Sister Cities International’s 60th anniversary through a specialized diplomatic simulation moderated by the U.S. Diplomacy Center, site visits, speaker sessions, and peer collaboration. Participants will learn how different national interests drive international cooperation on critical issues. Over three days, the Summit will provide students with effective problem solving strategies, leadership skills, and insights into international affairs.
Past Youth Leadership Summit participants reported that they gained a newfound interest in international affairs and the role that U.S. cities play in this equation. Through the Youth Leadership Summit, Sister Cities International empowers young people to think globally, spurring a new generation of citizen diplomats who become instrumental in promoting peace , mutual respect, and prosperity.
Cost
The cost of registration for this conference through SOS is $1,750. This fee includes conference registration, airfare, accommodations, meals and chaperoning from and to San Antonio. Two certified San Antonio area SOS teachers will chaperone this trip. Reserve your spot today!
