We've created SOS volunteering events that can be done from home. Earn service hours, make a difference.
This page shows the many programs SOS offers digitally, so you can Learn, Serve, and Explore from home. Check back regularly while we are practicing physical distancing to fight the COVID-19 virus spread. While we can't meet in person now, we can still make a difference and stay connected.
We want to hear from you! What ideas do you have to make a difference from home? Tell us your idea and we can help you Make it Happen, or check out the SOS From Home ideas on this page.
Serve from Home
Students can earn service hours even from home.
In accordance with safety measures mandated by our government, SOS has developed service events students can complete from home. Check out the events below.

Paint inspirational Rocks
Paint rocks with inspiring messages, and leave them around the neighborhood on streets, parks, and trails. Just take a picture of your inspirational rock and email it to our SOS representative.
Make Snack/Food Packs for the Homeless
We have an awesome opportunity to get service hours from your kitchen! An SOS volunteer team member hands out sack lunches to San Antonio’s homeless downtown. This member can only give out 25 lunches per week, so they asked SOS to help make a bigger impact.
Your job would be to make sack lunches (can only include pre-packaged foods) to be handed out to homeless people downtown. You do not have to hand out the lunches; the lunches would be picked up from your house and delivered by someone else.
This service project requires a permission slip from your parent/guardian. You will receive actual time credited for your work on the project.

Converse with a ESL Student
Converse with an ESL (English as Second Language) student, make a new friend with SOS. We are in need of students that are willing to have conversations with an ESL student via FaceTime, or Skype, or WhatsApp. We are looking to fill slots of half an hour each where you will be given a topic of conversation and simply have a dialog with this person. Sidewalk Art Service Project
Let's help lift the spirits of our community. For this project, we want you to either draw a picture or write an inspirational message on the sidewalk. Take a picture and send it to Mrs. Andersen.
[email protected]
Each picture or message will be worth 30 minutes of service hours.

Thank You Messages for COVID-19 Heroes
Write “Thank you!” messages and notes of appreciation to local and global heroes fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
Description: Write a letter or make a video thanking health care workers, grocery store employees, custodians and janitors, first responders, and all those in San Antonio and around the world for all of their hard work during this epidemic! With all of this fear and craziness going on, it’s important to thank those who are working to make the world a better place and find a cure for this virus as quickly as possible. It can feel like you are powerless, but you are not. Your words and kindness make a world of difference to those on the frontlines of this pandemic.
Guidelines: Videos must be no more than 30 seconds, letters must be no longer than a few paragraphs (Two 4-5 sentence chunks) and you can post your videos or notes on social media or email them to [email protected]. Please tag @sossanantonio on Instagram, @SOS_SanAntonio on Twitter, or @summerofservicesanantonio on Facebook. You can then log your hours on our portal. Use hashtag #VirtualCommunityService #COVID19 #WeAppreciateYou #Doctors #Nurses #Custodialworkers #medicalstaff #groceryworkers #flattenthecurve #LearnServeExplore #YouthVoice

Making personal masks for donations
Description:
The idea to make a homemade mask was created by fellow SOS student, Araceli. Students would be responsible for making homemade DIY face masks made from cloth and donating them to those who need them. You and your family can work on this project and SOS will log that time as volunteer hours in our system, after you submit your hours and pictures of your work.
Upon completion of your mask, please email Mr. Samandi, at [email protected].
For more information please visit the SOS portal.

Digital student ambassador program
The 2020 SOS Germany Digital Student Ambassador program will allow students to connect via virtual exchange with other students in our Sister City of Darmstadt, Germany. Students who are selected for the opportunity will represent San Antonio as a student ambassador. Once students are selected they will virtually "meet" twice a month and complete virtual activities with other exchange students. The program will last one year, and students will earn service hours as they participate in the program. To apply, click the button below. THE DEADLINE TO JOIN THIS COHORT HAS PASSED, BUT WE WILL CONTACT YOU WHEN WE OPEN A NEW COHORT. |
